This is Part 1 (of three parts) of the application for "Assessing for Change in Chemical Thinking" (ACCT) project's professional development program for January to June 2021. Teachers in the Eastern or Central time zones who are high school teachers of chemistry or middle school science teachers who teach some content related to chemistry are eligible to apply if they have been teaching at least 3 years. Preference will be given to teachers in public schools. Highlights about the professional development are described on the info page. The overarching goal of the professional development is to provide a learning community for mid-career teachers of chemistry to continue professional growth, particularly focusing on expanding and strengthening use of classroom formative assessment to support students’ chemical thinking. The professional development will span from January through June 2021, and involves an average time commitment of 2 to 4 hours per week. The program includes twelve 3-hour workshops, which will occur once every two weeks. All workshops will be virtual 3-hour meetings and will occur during after-school hours. There will also be homework in between, including videoing in your classroom, sharing and commenting on other teachers' classroom videos, designing formative assessment activities, and providing student work (names removed) with your reflections. Participants will earn 6 graduate credits in chemistry (2 courses, one per half-semester) from the University of Massachusetts Boston.
The professional development will span from mid-August 2020 through June 2021, and involves an average time commitment of 2 to 4 hours per week. The yearlong PD includes twelve 3-hour workshops. If the COVID-19 situation permits, two of these at the start of the year (August 2020) will be combined into a full-day in-person PD in Boston, and the last two will be an all-day in-person PD at the end of the year (June 2021). Except for in-person PD, all workshops will be virtual 3-hour meetings and will occur during after-school hours. Sub coverage will be provided to your school for any in-person all-day meetings that occur during the school year. There will also be homework in between, including videoing in your classroom, sharing and commenting on other teachers' classroom videos, designing formative assessment activities, and providing student work (names removed) with your reflections. Participants will have the option of receiving 6 graduate credits in chemistry (2 courses, one per semester) from the University of Massachusetts Boston, or a stipend of $1,500 at the end of the year.
After you complete Part 1 (this survey), please download and also complete Part 2 of the application. Part 3 is not due with the application (it will be requested only of accepted participants), but it is described below so that you will know what it is.
Part 2: Download the Formative Assessment Template below. Input your own information into the template to complete the application as a Word document. We ask that you provide a current example of how you use formative assessment in chemistry. Email your completed Word document to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Part 3: Research approval. Once teachers are selected as finalists, but before they are accepted to join the cohort, we will seek approval of the research by your school or district. We want to let you know about it in advance because there is a question in Part 1 of the application that asks you to provide information so that we can follow up. Teachers who are accepted to the cohort will be expected to participate in the research study funded by the National Science Foundation, which is sponsoring the professional development. Therefore, a contingency of acceptance is that your school or district approves the associated educational research. In your application, we ask you to provide the name and contact information for someone in your school district (usually at the superintendent’s office level) with whom we will work to request approval of data collection in your classroom for the research associated with the ACCT project.
